TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

As a teacher and also as a human being, I believe that every child is blessed by God with their own talent since they are born. God’s work has given them the ability to survive in this world. The problem is, do they use this ability given to them usefully or not. Sometimes their talent is implicated. In this case, their talent needs to be elicited and motivated. That is why we as educators play an important role in nurturing them.

We as educator should ensure that our primary role is not just delivering theory. We should also ensure that our lesson will also leave a strong effect on the minds of the students class activities such as role playing, simulation, problem based learning, inquiry and cooperative learning should always be carried out so that the students can have the chance to think critically and creatively. Students’ involvement in class activities can inculcate their interest in their studies. Thus, they will not get bored with the lesson and will not start to make noises in class.

In my experiences in teaching poor performance classes, I found that, early childhood educations that begin in kindergarten, lower primary schools is very important. While teaching science in English, I found a lot of students were intellectual but they had problems in vocabulary that resulted in them having a hard time in learning science. In the KBSR and KBSM system that was introduced in 1988 and 1989, the systems implemented the use of three skills of reading, writing and counting (3M). If these three skills cannot be mastered, how can we teach theories with so many new terms.

Every teacher should be responsible in carrying out their responsibilities as a teacher regardless of what Form 1 class they are teaching. We should not be tardy or have a “don’t care” attitude even if we are chosen to teach classes that don’t have big examinations such as primary 6, Form 3 and Form 5. The basics are the most important thing for them to master so that they will be able to explore knowledge into more detail. So, we need to play our part in the mastering the certain techniques of teaching so that the teaching and learning process will be able to be carried out successfully and each student will be able to get something out of the lesson. We need to be up to date will the latest advancements in education and improve our technique of teaching.

My goal in the teaching and learning process is not only from the students to achieve good results but also from them to be individuals that are rational and balanced with morals and values. Even if they cannot succeed in education, I hope that will become individuals in line with the objectives of the national education philosophy balanced in intellect, emotions, and spiritually. Normally, I always remind my students about their responsibilities to themselves, their parents, the society and country. If they do not want to waste their life on earth, they need to be hardworking and study for their future.

Students nowadays now differ from students from the older generations in terms of thinking, their surroundings and attitudes. Students nowadays are braver in stating their opinion and questioning the teacher when given instructions. In order for them to respect me as a teacher, I will treat them as friends but to an extent so that they will not take advantage of me. This way, I will be able to go into their world and know their personal problems.
